Playground by the Sound

A need for "Playground by the Sound"
Our youngest citizens need exercise, too! Currently there is no place for tots and their families to play in a safe, interactive environment. Climbing, sliding, running and jumping on a playground provide much better exercise than being pushed along the trail in a stroller. Also, playgrounds promote important social interaction for our children and their families.

To help facilitate this higher level of activity, the City wants to build a safe, fun, top quality, safe play structure on the North Meadow of the Chambers Creek Properties. The Play Ground By The Sound will provide a much needed playground for families and tots to enjoy the Chambers Creek experience to its fullest in a safe and fun environment.

The Children of the community will help "design" the Playground By The Sound

Design Day is the official kick-off to this process and is powered by the children. A designer will spend a full 12-14 hour day in our community. Brainstorming sessions with the children will occur on June 10 and 11.

Imagine, Dream and Draw. Children will be asked to put their ideas on paper, which will be given to the designer. The drawings and interview sessions will provide inspiration to the designer for the various playground components.

The Playground design is being coordinated by Leathers and Associates. It will have an environmental science theme as well as elements that reflect the local community. A few examples of educational components included in the past are a DNA climber, echo tube, friction slide, dinosaur dig, sundial, and abacus. Some projects include historical storefronts or play elements that reflect the local community's industry (i.e., coal mining, railroad depots, airplanes near an Air Force base.)

What you can do
Currently the City has raised over $23,000, but a total of $200,000 is needed in order to transform this dream of a Playground by the Sound into a reality. Your money will help pay for a structure that is not only safe, but that also fosters health and smart play. The money will also be used to purchase top quality, recycled, kid-safe materials so that the Playground can be built to last.

Please help make the "Playground by the Sound" a reality by making a tax deductible contribution to the City of University Place "Playground by the Sound" fund. Please join your neighbors in creating this lasting gift to your community and your family.

Do you want to help, but are unable to do so financially? No problem! We are always looking for ways to help raise money for the "Playground by the Sound". If you have an idea for a fundraiser or would simply like to help, contact Mayor Linda Bird at (253) 564-6305.

Thank you for your generosity toward the children and families of University Place.
